Discuss Academic Updates
Dr. Shajaira Lopez, Chief Academic Officer, gave an overview of the committee's meeting agenda, including initial ELPAC findings, LCPS partnerships and programs, ELD implementation and integrated ELD challenges, and how LCPS is continuing to work on the strategic priorities.
Kathleen Liljeberg, Director of Assessment and Performance Management, reviewed a brief highlight of the latest California Dashboard data revolving around the English Language Progress Indicator.
The board asked about the ELD master plan, and Dr. Lopez said it is under review and will be updated soon.
Dr. Lopez continued with her findings on monitoring ELD and ensuring positive impacts. She shared her ELD priorities, including clarifying expectations, strengthening instruction, monitoring implementation outcomes, and strengthening targeted supports.
The board asked, for teachers who were not using the curriculum, what the barrier was. Dr. Lopez responded with some preconceptions from teachers and how it's been necessary to build teacher understanding and capacity.
Dezaree Doloriat, Director of Student Services & Community Schools, presented the background and context for the LCPS student services background and her reflections on the position and systems over the last year. Dez has spoken about providing clarity on the work and ensuring sites know how to partner. She continued on the plan and partnership collaboration for attendance initiatives.
The board asked about how to improve the culture around attendance and build towards a shared responsibility. Dez responded that it is an ongoing effort, and while the technical systems are in place, it is continued work to translate them into staff culture.
Dez discussed the overview of the implementation of the Social Emotional Screener that recently occurred and how CLT and counseling will use the data for future work to work towards a better student cultural environment. LCPS will do further monitoring with CHKS in the future.
Dez then presented the continuous improvement cycle for the student services team and how it aligns to the school calendar. Additionally, her final reflections and takeaways for next steps are investment in programs and platforms.
