Discuss Academic Updates
Josh Weintraub, Senior Director of College and Career, updated the academic committee on student achievement related to secondary education. Josh updated the board on dual enrollment with the number of students achieving college credit and A-G completion rates among students. Josh then overviewed career preparation for students, including the newest health science pathway and its implementation. Josh then gave high-level overviews on post-secondary decisions among students, showing the percentages of students going to 2-year, University of California, California State University, private school, or trade work.
The board asked about the rigor level of the college courses offered, to which Josh responded that it varies by the professor, with factors such as late work acceptance and other personal approaches to teaching.
The board asked about the differences between Lighthouse and Lodestar dual enrollment rates, to which Josh responded that, due to Lodestar opening later as a school, programs were implemented later and are expanding at a gradual pace.
The board asked if there were any trends along demographics for students choosing post-secondary outcomes, to which Josh responded that the highest trend relates to gender, with young women choosing 4-year colleges at a higher rate compared to only young men pursuing trades. Josh indicated that ethnicities did not show any strong trends.
Josh spoke to how LCPS can continue to improve college readiness for students, with ideas around alumni surveys, replicating college systems more thoroughly, such as class finals, or a deeper understanding of why some alumni may drop out of college and the factors into that.
The board commented on ideas on how systems could be created easily, highlighting alumni who entered into programs that could support future graduates, such as engagement in groups or providing college tours.
Shaina Hurley, Lead Principal of Lighthouse TK-5, spoke to the median growth of students in MAP and how students are focusing for CAASPP.
Dr. Latora Baldridge, Head of School at Lodestar, also commented on the focus of students in CAASPP and how students were engaged in goal-setting, then reviewing scores with teachers. Dr. B spoke to pockets of concern but also the outstanding growth of students in upper grades.
Seeing none and hearing none, public comment was closed.
