I. Opening Items

Call the Meeting to Order

H. Harshman called a meeting of the board of directors of BELIEVE SCHOOLS, INC to order on Wednesday May 17, 2023 at 5:18 PM.

B.

Student Visit

Autumn Joshua kicked off the meeting discussing her experiences at BELIEVE Circle City High School. She talked about her journey at BELIEVE. Autumn is finishing her junior year at BELIEVE and just graduated with her Associates Degree at Ivy Tech.

Approve March Minutes

J. Fulk made a motion to approve the minutes from BELIEVE March Board Meeting on 03-21-23.
H. Harshman seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

II. School Updates

A.

Principal's Report

Academic

  • Two active grant applications out to CSGF for academic iniatives. 
  • Hiring DOI next school year so KR (CAO) can pull back from that work. 
  • Quarterly Assessments that aligned to semesters
  • Part of Bridgess to Readiness iniative through TMT currently
  • 3 scholars completed their Associates Degree this year (all juniors); 2 more this summer; 12 on track to finish by summer 2024 
  • Shifts to curriculum are included in the report in various content areas
  • Observations and evaluations: Data will be shared at the next board meeting as these wrap and are finalized. 
  • Round Tables: Collecting feedback and insights from teachers and staff members to promote change and development (academic calendar, survey data, etc). All of this is guiding summer retreat and summer PD for all staff. 
  • Legacy Project Presentations: Capstone for every grade level; 23&Me Testing for Junior projects: looks at legacy and generations of impact. 

Talent/Hiring

  • Open Positions: DOSE and DOSS, Math Instructor, and Scholar Support: ELL, SPED, Social Worker 
  • Phone screens are continuing 
  • SPED and ELL teacher in the pipeline

Staff & School Culture

  • Teacher appreciation week
  • Friday rotations

 

Challenges/Additional Updates

  • Enrollment/Testing Challenges
  • Partnering with schools to conduct testing with students at the school's individually

TV shared updates with the board. 

 

JF included that this budget is a conservative approach to the budget.

J. Fulk made a motion to approve the minutes from April Board Meeting on 04-20-22.
H. Harshman seconded the motion.
The board VOTED to approve the motion.

Dennis shared that there are no major updates. Working to schedule an intensive June committee meeting to deep dive academic data.

Bunmi shared updates from the board mixer last month. Goal is to do an annual board mixer with another in September. 

 

Planning a fundraiser event in September that will serve as a Back-to-School Mixer w/ silent auction, DJ, brunch, and beverages! 

 

Looking at September/October dates. 

 

Potential dates will be shared with the group. Saturday date will be coming soon. 

V. Board Engagement & Celebrations

Previous Month's Engagements & Celebrations

  • First mini-graduation is this upcoming weekend: open invite to all students 
    • 10AM @ Ivy Tech Culinary Ballroom 
  • Future Plans
    • 4 will be attending 4-year universities
    • 1 scholar attending junior college in Iowa 
    • 1 scholar entering Messer Construction's Apprenticeship Program 
  • Jennifer and Marques: Shoutout around budget and finance conversations
  • Dr. T & Haley: Shoutout to co-chairs for commitment and dedication to the network 
  • Bunmi and Derek: Commitment to committee involvement and implementation

Upcoming Opportunities

KNB shared that we're trying to expand and grow our board at BCCHS. Goal to have A. Hervey and Dr. Jones join the board. KNB shared that she's had 1-on-1 conversations with both individuals. 

 

Dr. Turner shared excitement for both individuals to join the board. Discussion will happen during Executive Session. Voting will occur during the next board meeting in June.

Next meeting is June 21st, 2023 at 5PM ET.

Four potential dates will go out to the board for August.
