Call the Meeting to Order

C. Gaines called a meeting of the board of directors of One City Schools to order on Tuesday Oct 27, 2020 at 4:06 PM.

Approve Minutes

S. Martyniak made a motion to Approve the minutes from September 22, 2020 One City Regular Board Meeting on 09-22-20.
G. Derzon seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

II. New Business -- Appointment and recognition

A.

Recognition of Bob Beckman as Board member and Finance Committee Chair

Robert "Bob" Beckman submitted his resignation from the Board of Directors in October 2020. He served on the Board as its treasurer and finance committee chair since January 2018. We are thankful for his great service. He did a lot to get our organization to where it is now. We will invite Bob to the November 17, 2020 Board meeting to recognize him for his service and contribution to One City Schools.

B.

The appointment of Catherine Zdeblick to the One City Board of Directors

G. Derzon made a motion to approve the appointment of Ms. Catherine Zdeblick to One City's Board of Directors.
L. McDonald seconded the motion.
One City CEO nominated Ms. Catherine Zdeblick to One City's Board of Directors. Ms. Zdeblick has been a volunteer and donor to One City since 2018, and has helped the organization provide needed technology to our children and staff in support of our virtual learning program. She has also worked to get others involved in supporting One City as donors and volunteers. We are happy to recommend Ms. Zdeblick to serve as a member of One City's Board of Directors. 
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.

III. Regular Items

A.

Financial Review

Salli Maryniak reported that she will serve as interim chair of the Finance Committee while the search for a new chair is conducted. There is nothing significant to report from the Finance Committee at this time.

IV. Facility Update

A.

CEO Caire will provide a facility update and discussion

David Stephan, One City's Chief Operating Officer, reported that the Facilities Committee is focused on finding a new school building or working with ULI to extend the current lease on the Coyier location. The Committee is currently interviewing realtors to assist in the search process.

V. One City Parent Board Member Input

A.

Members of the Board who are also One City parents will have an opportunity to share an update with the full Board.

Parent Board Members Toya Pedracine and Wajiha Akhtar-Khaleel led the discussion on behalf of One City's parent-led Parent Council.

Parents stated that it is important for One City staff to wear masks correctly 100% of the time. Parents would appreciate more updates from teachers on what is happening in classrooms, since they cannot visit this year. Parents also expressed some concern regarding potential testing for COVID-19 through UW. Namely there is interest in setting up a One City Institutional Review Board for future research activities taking place at One City. 

VI. Executive Update

A.

One City Preschool presentation by Bryce Pickett, Preschool Director 

Bryce Pickett has been hired as Preschool Director, Lucas Dronzek as new 4K Teacher and Kearra Caldwell-Banker as a Float Teacher. A second 4K teacher will be offered the position shortly. Each of the preschool classrooms should be full by the end of the year.

B.

Executive Office Update by Kaleem Caire, Founder and CEO

Priorities are high quality programming at Preschool and Elementary Schools, keeping everyone in our school community healthy, and participating in a national campaign for public charter schools through the National Charter School Association.

C.

Elementary School Update by Faren D'Abell, Principal  

Faren D’Abell reported that One City has parted ways with one of our 5K teachers. A new 5K teacher. Malcolm Calbert has been hired as a student support specialist. Kindergarten classrooms have been restructured and are now running more smoothly. Virtual family conferences will be scheduled for mid-November. Academies have been running smoothly but will be limited to 30 minutes in the future. Mr. Hodge and Mr. Jabari Caire are preparing a unit focused on Imperialism.

Ms. Traxler is organizing a mock election. Special Education initial evaluations are underway. IPads are now set up and available for all students. Smartboards and Swivls will help to enhance in person and remote students’ experiences. Staff held a successful professional development day.

D.

Fundraising and External Relations Updated by Gail Wiseman, VP of External Relations

Simone Lawrence has moved into a full time position as Administrative Manager for the External Relations team. Xena Zupan will take over as Kaleem Caire’s Executive Assistant. Fundraising campaign will kick off after the elections. Summit Credit Union is sponsoring a drive-in movie night at Coyier Lane for One City families. Marilyn Ruffin and staff are continuously looking for ways to keep families and staff engaged and active as the dark days of winter approach. Coach Henry is raising money for snowshoes to ensure scholars spend as much time outdoors learning as possible during the winter days ahead. The We Are One celebration will be a virtual event, on a date to be determined in February 2021. Even with Covid-19, One City volunteers continue to make huge contributions to the school, driving the food van, virtual tutoring, manning the front desk at Fisher Street, and more.

E.

Board Members to Receive One City Email Address

Board members may want to have a One City email. The CEO will have One City staff will follow-up with Board members about this between now and the November 17th Board meeting to determine whether or not One City email addresses will be issued to Board Directors.

Adjourn Meeting

L. McDonald made a motion to Adjourn the November 17, 2020 Board Meeting.
W. Akhtar seconded the motion.
The board VOTED unanimously to approve the motion.
There being no further business to be transacted, and upon motion duly made, seconded and approved, the meeting was adjourned at 6:00 PM.
