II. Review of Potential Board Member Captain Mike Hanson 4:05 PM
 
The One City Board of Directors will review and discuss potential new Board member Mike Hanson. The Board will be asked to vote on Captain Hanson as a new member of the Board at the February 22, 2022 meeting.

Mike Hanson is a Captain with the Madison Police Department where he has served for over twenty years.  Currently, Mike is the Captain of the South District where he works with the community on problem solving issues and community relations.  Mike has a college degree in public relations and a master’s degree in human resource management.  Mike is born and raised in Madison and found a career that allowed him to help others and make a difference in our community.  As an adjunct instructor for Northwestern University, Mike has always been committed to education and life-long learning.  Mike created a fundraising mechanism throughout the community to hire tutors to increase reading scores with our youth who are behind.  This program has grown in the three years of development to reach out to more youth in need.  Additionally as a Captain, Lieutenant and neighborhood officer Mike has been involved in leading numerous community events.  Some of those events include Safety Walks, Job Fairs in challenged neighborhoods, federal grants to build trust in the community and reduce crime and most recently a grant to “Wrap Around” services directly into homes to help break the cycle of crime. The “Wrap Around” grant will bring services such as trauma care, AODA issues, housing, employment and more resources to families who have had children spinning in the criminal justice system.  Mike is married and has three children.

Brianna  Stuczynski, Strategic Governance Coach with Board on Track will demonstrate some of the most useful and helpful functions available through Board on Track.

Ms. Stucynski will provide an overview of Board on Track functions, including:
  • How to accept invitations, access meeting materials (current, past and future) from within the platform
  • How to create goals and tasks and track progress
  • How to update your profile, add contact information, manage notifications, file skills & complete a 90 second demographics survey
  • Integrating calendar resources
  • How to contact Board on Track with questions

Leah Lange of Numbers 4 Nonprofits has prepared One City's November and December financial statements. 

One City Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, Torrey Jaeckle will present the statements during the meeting. He will also provide a review of our current financial performance, with support from Ms. Lange. The Board will discuss and then vote to approve the financial statements. 
 
  B. Report on One City's 2020-2021 Financial Audit by Wegner CPAs Vote Lisa Lang and Torrey Jaeckle 20 m
   
Lisa Lang, Supervisor at Wegner CPAs of Madison (Wegner CPAs) will report on the results of our 2019-20 financial audit. The Board will be asked to vote to accept the audit. 
 
V. Highlights of a One City Classroom 4:55 PM

Each month, the Board will be treated to a presentation by one of One City Schools excellent classroom teachers. Teachers will share what their class has been working on and what they will work on in the coming weeks and months. 

 

This month, we will introduce the board to Laurie Peterson, who has been recently promoted to Master Teacher, and has moved to working with our 4th grade scholars.  Ms. Peterson will report on her work with our 3rd grade scholars, where she has spent the majority of her time. Ms. Peterson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education in 1995. Since then, she has taught pre-kindergarten-third grade and has served students and families in public, private, and charter school settings. Recently, she earned her Master's degree in Educational Leadership. In her free time, she enjoys reading, walking, biking, and spending time with her golden retriever, Roscoe.

  B. One City Student Enrollment Update for the 2021-22 School Year / Marketing Plan for 2022-24 School Year Enrollment FYI M.Ruffin 5 m
   
Vice President of Family and Community Engagement Marilyn Ruffin will provide a brief update on current enrollment and plans for open enrollment which begins in March 2022. 

 

Currently, 225 out of 254 spots available are filled. We are at 88.6% capacity, with 127 applications waitlisted. 

 

Open enrollment begins March 1st, 2022 – March 18th, 2022 ( Enrollment Marketing Plan
We expect a total of 590 students to be enrolled for 2022-23 school year:
326 students in Elementary (4K-5th grades)  and 264 students in OCPA (6th, 9th, 10th grades).

 

One City Open Houses will be held virtually and will be open to the community and prospective families.
Preschool Open House dates (4K & under): February 8th & February 16th, 2022 at 5:30-6:30PM.
Elementary Open House dates (5K - 5th grades): February 10th & February 23rd, 2022 at 5:30-6:30PM.
OCPA Open House dates (6th, 9th, 10th grades): February 10th & February 23rd, 2022 at 7:00-8:00P

 

 

 

 

 
  C. Staffing Updates FYI David Stephan 5 m
   
The Human Resources Manager position has been filled. We are happy to welcome Megan Leroy to One City Schools. Ms. Leroy will report to Chief Talent Officer David Stephan. Ms. Leroy's first day was January 13th and she is already participating in interviews and hitting her stride. Ms. Leroy's email is mleroy@onecityschools.org.

 

Traditional search processes for the Director of Finance position have not yielded positive results. In order to optimize our search process, the team will begin talking with two individuals who have a proven record of recruiting high quality applicants:

Positions have been posted for the majority of openings we foresee for the secondary school, with initial and second round interviews for teaching positions already underway. Most positions require four rounds of interviews - an initial screening conversation (30 minutes), a second round with relevant staff (1 hour), a third round with parents (30-60 minutes), and a final round with Chief Talent Officer David Stephan and/or CEO Kaleem Caire, along with Co-Assistant Principal Ms. Christine Hodge. 

 

 



 
 
  D. Secondary School Planning Updates FYI Devon Davis 5 m
   
Head of Schools, Ms. Devon Davis will provide an update on plans for One City Preparatory Academy (OCPA).
Edgewood College has been added to the list of schools interested in working with us on our bachelors’ to elementary education degree program. We are additionally pursuing both Project Lead the Way (STEM-based curriculum) and Leader in Me (student leadership curriculum) as additions to the secondary school.
 
  E. Facilities Update Discuss David Stephan and Kaleem Caire 10 m
   
Chief Talent Officer David Stephan and CEO Kaleem Caire will provide Board members with an update on the state of renovations to the facility and next steps.

 

The Board will review descriptions and purpose of each of the new One City entities.  
 
  F. Fundraising Update and Capital Campaign Plan Discuss Kaleem Caire and Gail Wiseman 10 m
   
Kaleem Caire, CEO and Gail Wiseman, VP of External Relations will share an update on fundraising efforts to date.  

 

We must raise $5M for our Capital Campaign. This is the amount needed to ensure renovation of the elementary school by fall of 2022.  Additionally, we must continue to raise money for operations. Our operations fundraising goal for the remainder of the year is $500K. 

 

A special session of the Board will be held in early February to share fundraising plan details, specifying a role for each Board member to play as a critical part of our Capital Campaign. Board members will be asked to select and commit to a date for the special session as attendance by all is essential.

One City Schools has a strong foundation of active and engaged parents. Parent representatives who serve on One City's Board of Directors will have the opportunity to share an update with the Board on behalf of the One City parent-led Parent Council.  

 

Parent Board Members Ms. Toya Pedracine-Stewart, Dr. Dominic Ledesma, and Dr, Wajiha Akhtar-Khaleel will present/lead the discussion, including a report on the monthly Parent Council meeting.
