Call the Meeting to Order

Call to order by Christine Espina on March 27, 2023 at 3:15 pm.

II. 1. Academic Excellence

A.

General orientation to the Academic Committee

Committee goals/areas of focus

  • Grow curriculum and ensure academic assessments per standards
  • Need to start looking at 4-year cycle for graduation class
  • Look at the school-wide plan
  • School reform strategies specific to academics
  • Brainstorming activities to ensure mastery
  • Integration and coordination of different concepts
  • Areas of need for staff PD

School-based committees

  • Curriculum, Evaluation, and Development Committee - Dawn will invite instructors who serve on this committee to join the Academic Excellence Committee.

B.

Academic Dashboard Review

  • Attendance and enrollment: SkyWard
  • Assessment data from different sources
  • Grading system will be in SkyWard fully by fall 2023 - Staff have had training in December and January. Families are being trained to use SkyWard.
  • Dawn reviewed the January and February 2023 Academic Dashboard.
  • Interim assessments discussed - purpose, results, etc.
  • Ninth Grade Fall 2021 ELA & Math assessment reviewed: Level 3 is considered passing at the high school level.
  • Several 10th-grade students opted out to take assessment tests in spring 2022. Team will be thinking about how to "re-brand" the tests. Dawn to double check the math on statement that "25% of students [among those tested] met the graduation cut score for math" in the January 2023 Academic Dashboard report.
  • SBA Benchmark Assessment is scheduled for mid-late May.
  • One interim assessment (progress monitoring) then SBAC for 10th graders in spring 2022.

Plan of Improvement for Math

  1. IXL online curriculum for students purchased for math and ELA. This is an interim solution.
    1. Dawn is investigating whether to switch to different interim assessments besides Smarter Balance interim assessments. Other charter schools are using NWEA or I-Ready, though i-ready is more suited for elementary and middle school students, not high school. Can do an interim assessment before teaching (pre-test). The team focused on reading texts and algebra equations. Caution not to use General interim assessments as it's assessing content not recently taught.
  2. Overlay of SPED and math--how many SPED students are scoring level 1 math?
    1. If/when hired, the para-educator could support students in math

III. Closing Items

Adjourn Meeting
