CSGF - CSGF’s Board Basics – A Practical Governance Toolkit

Board Basics is a governance toolkit built specifically for charter CEOs and boards to help ensure you have the essentials in place. Here you’ll find the Board Basics Model & Toolkit with links to practical guides that have concrete tools and examples from networks across the CSGF portfolio.

What Should Your First Move Be?

Start with the Board Basics Self-Assessment—ideally with your board chair. It takes less than 10 minutes and gives you a shared picture of where you're strong and where you might want to focus together this year. We've also included a short email template you can use to engage your board chair. The goal is to identify the moves that matter most right now and make progress toward them.

OEO

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Office of Charter Schools (OCS) and the Universities of Wisconsin Office of Educational Opportunity (OEO) are excited to announce its 2026–27 Charter School Board Governance Trainings. This initiative was developed in recognition of the vital role strong board governance plays in leading a successful school, and our shared commitment to ensuring board members are well-equipped to meet their roles and responsibilities. We have partnered with Dr. Ihrke at the UW-Milwaukee Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management, who will be leading these trainings.

These trainings are offered four times a year, and we ask that a minimum of two board members be present for each session. Our first kick-off session will be conducted in person at Mill Creek Academy (an OEO school), with the remaining sessions offered virtually. The first session is intended for new board members, any board member who has not received formal board training, or any board member who would like to strengthen their governance capacity. School leaders are welcome to attend any sessions as well.

We kindly ask that you share the survey below with the board members who will be attending on behalf of KTEC, to identify their availability for each training session. Please note that the same board members do not need to attend every session — different board members may attend different sessions, with a minimum of two board members required per session. Once responses have been collected, we will share the training times that work best for the majority of respondents. We ask that the survey be completed by June 15.

We are excited about this work and the value it will bring to KTEC — particularly the opportunity for board members to get to know one another and learn from each other!
