A regular meeting of the KIPP Philadelphia Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee in joint session with regular meetings of the KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee, KIPP DuBois Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee, KIPP West Philadelphia Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee, KIPP North Philadelphia Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee, and KIPP Parkside Charter School Board of Trustees Academics Committee, with Committee Chair Gail Lewis presiding.

Call the Meeting to Order

J. Cunningham Akoto called a meeting of the School Health Committee of KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools to order on Monday Nov 9, 2020 at 4:03 PM.

II. Virtual School Model

A.

Attendance

  1. J. Cunningham opened the meeting discussing the updates on virtual school progress and how attendance is being tracked with elementary and middle school attendance being a steady 84%+
  2. J. Cunningham continued to discuss attendance among the high school to address average daily attendance vs. class attendance and chronic absenteeism

Engagement

  1. J. Cunningham opened the discussion around student engagement being strongest in the middle school
  2. J. Cunningham continued the discussion about the Academics Team work to ensure lessons are consistently engaging and employing strong tech tools to support student engagement

C.

MAP scores and assessment

  1. J. Cunningham opened the discussion around assessment addressing lack of confidence in Fall MAP data surrounding testing challenges due to COVID/virtual learning
  2. J. Cunningham continued discussion on curriculum assessments progress being slower in virtual school model
    1. Some bright spots at all school levels that can leverage to accelerate performance across all grades

III. SY 20-21 Goals (Revisions)

A.

North Star Goals

  1. J. Cunningham revisited academic goals for SY 20-21 and what metric revisions will take place for testing in Spring

IV. Reopening Plan

A.

Current reopening plan

  1. J. Cunningham addressed the reopening plan that will slowly take place starting in January
    1.  Plan takes into account students and families that will travel during the holiday break
    2. Anticipation of over 65% of families will opt into in-person school
  2. J. Cunningham continued to discuss the anticipation of the COVID spike in January and will reassess this plan accordingly

V. Deep Dive: KTCC

A.

December Board Retreat prep

  1. J. Cunningham spoke on KTCC deep dive and discusses the 3 pillars of the program: Match, Persistence, & Career
  2. J. Cunningham discussed the Match pillar which focuses on the colleges that are right for graduating students
  3. J. Cunningham discussed the Persistence pillar which focuses on the path students are on once they graduate high school by collecting data 
  4. J. Cunningham discussed the Career pillar which focuses on alumni entering the workforce
