II. SCHOOL CULTURE

A.

CAPTURING KIDS' HEARTS

  • Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH) - On March 22, 2021, John McGee from Flippen Group visited IHSNO. They provide visits twice a school year.
  • Because of COVID-19, the school year has been a challenge for IHSNO.
  • Mr. McGee has found that IHSNO does demonstrate CKH inside the classrooms.
  • Social contracts were posted within the classroom.
  • All staff training will take place in August as it pertains to CKH. It will take place over 2 days.
  • IHSNO would like to see all students back in the building for the school.
  • At IHSNO, we celebrate the small wins.
  • IHSNO is encouraging students to attend school, and some of them are awarded for having good attendance.
  • The committee is trying to understand Capturing Kids Hearts better. The committee would like to see something that could help them to have a better understanding.
  • CKH is not necessarily a lesson. It is a way of how you interact with the students. It helps to empower the students. It helps teachers and staff treat students that will ultimately teach students better. It is more about accountability.
  • The committee would like to know how Capturing Kids would be measured to see if it is successful.
  • Process Champions was explained
  • The reductions in incidents were explained. Most students have been virtual therefore there are not as many incidents to be reported.
  • In previous dashboards, the incidents have been reported.
  • During a previous retreat, there was a demonstration of social contracts that took place that explained how social contracting works.
  • During the first 15 minutes of the next academic meeting, there can be a demonstration of how social contracting works.
  • Some of the current board members may not have been there at the retreat when social contracting was demonstrated.
  • The committee members would like to see how Capturing Kids Hearts have improved the students' grades academically.
  • The committee believes that if there is less time spent on discipline, then maybe more time can be spent on teaching students.
  • The committee would like to have a better understanding of the correlation between discipline having an impact on academics.

B.

SPECIAL REQUEST

  • The committee members are requesting specific data reports that are listed in the agenda. The committee is hopeful that they can receive the reports by 6/8/2021.
  • If the committee does not receive the data reports by 6/8/2021, then would understand. The committee would like to see as much data as possible so that they can have a better understanding of the academics.
  • The committee would like to have information given to them that would better explain to them what is happening and for at least 4 years now, there has not been improvement in IHSNO's overall student performance scores. It has been at a C level and has not shown any improvement.
  • The strategic plan for IHSNO states that IHSNO should be rated as an A school by the Fall of 2020 and is currently not there. IHSNO is still rated as a C school.
  • Providing the committee with as much data as possible can help the committee have a better grasp on what is going on at the school and how and when can it improve.
  • The committee stated that if it cannot be provided by 6/8/2021, then to let the committee know.
  • The committee would like to have a better understanding of why IHSNO is not rated as an A school (by the state) yet.
  • The committee would definitely like to at least see the March test results sooner than June if possible.
  • The committee would like to see how to improve the dashboard.
  • The committee explained what documents/reports they would like to have sent to them.
